Dr. Melanie Joy
Dr. Melanie Joy is a Harvard-educated psychologist, celebrated speaker, and the author of five books, including the award-winning Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows; Beyond Beliefs: A Guide to Improving Relationships and Communication for Vegans, Vegetarians, and Meat Eaters; Powerarchy: Understanding the Psychology of Oppression for Social Transformation; and Getting Relationships Right. Dr. Joy is the eighth recipient of the Ahimsa Award – previously given to the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela – for her work on global nonviolence. Her work has been featured in major media outlets around the world, including the BBC, ABC Australia, NPR, and the New York Times, and she has given talks and trainings in nearly 50 countries. Dr. Joy is also the founding president of Beyond Carnism.
Philip experientially realised the nature of the True Self which he refers to as Infinite Silence after a 14 year meditation journey which, interestingly, was partly inspired by a skiing holiday in Vancouver/Whistler in the year 2000.
In his former life he was a Chartered Civil Engineer and Director of a large Consultancy business in the UK. He left that world behind in 2009 following a deep spiritual calling and never looked back.
His sharing is reported to be simple, direct, profound, compassionate and of exquisite clarity. It is all based on direct experience is practical and is not rooted in any tradition. It is ideal for the modern era. The calling has seen him share in person across the UK, Iceland, Amsterdam, Crete and Corfu (Greek Islands) and globally online. He has a large open source website and YouTube Channel with many free Self Realisation resources.
Yogacharini Maitreyi is a practical Mystic and the founder of Arkaya Awareness Centre. She was given many titles in India since 1997 like Yoga chemmal (expert), Yoga shiromani (gem), and Yoga acharini (guide) for sharing the deeper dimensions of sattvic tantric yoga. She has taught a wide variety of people, from Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka, prisoners in Sweden, an all Islamic group in Bangladesh, yoga teachers in Vancouver to children and CEO’s for over 22 years. Maitreyi has trained over 60 corporations in self and stress management programs and has over 100 published articles and poems. She brings a calm and lightness to the teachings & classes and encourages people to tap into play.
When in Vancouver, she trains teachers & healers in the Arkaya Awareness teacher training. This is a 300 hour self awareness and self discovery program over 4 modules for better assimilation. Kathryn is a speaker, performer, writer, educator, and passionate advocate for creative, justice-infused, world-saving action. She was the co-founder and executive director of the award-winning climate and sustainability game Vermontivate, founded the environmental news radio show Earth On The Air, co-founded the Lysistrata Project, the first worldwide theatrical event for peace, and is the author of Dancing To The Beat Of The Great, Green Heart, a collection of essays and speeches on building a climate movement of hope and power. She served as board chair of the climate action group 350 Vermont, and has given speeches, taught workshops, and toured her one-woman shows in over 60 cities in the US, Canada, UK, and Europe. A yogini with a 30+ year practice, Kathryn received her BA from Yale with a self-designed degree in environmental studies and theater, and is an ordained Minister with the Universal Life Church.
I have always had an interest in science and health, but my passion for environmentalism has been growing for the past few years, as the climate crisis has become greater than ever. Having been an omnivore for the majority of my life, I stopped eating meat in 2019, and became vegan seven months ago due to the effects that animal agriculture has on our planet. The transition to a plant-based diet was relatively easy for me to make, and this is because veganism is no longer a taboo but a widespread way of life. There are now incredible vegan restaurants, cafes and markets, and the majority of non-plant-based restaurants have vegan options. Additionally, 2020 saw all high-street supermarkets drastically increase their plant-based ranges, making veganism more accessible to everyone. As much as I love that I now have the option to be able to grab-and-go with a vegan ready-meal, living a plant-based lifestyle has really augmented my love of cooking. It is exciting to try new foods, such as jackfruit, and prepare them in a way that even a carnivore, like my father, loves and admit that “you don’t miss meat in this meal!”.
I have been practicing for 11 years. Yoga has helped me in the darkest moments of my life when I was sick & when I lost my dad. As a way of living besides being a complete physical practice that can transform your body it teaches you to respect your body’s limit & abilities but working on improving & appreciating the small progress every step of the way. It also teaches you to be true to yourself & accept life challenges to flow with love. I became a teacher to share this with my students & help them evolve and become a better person both on and off the Mat.

Sara has a passion for travelling and has been fortunate enough to visit 41 countries. Her first epiphany happened recently after spending 168 hours in silence at a meditation retreat in Koh Samui,Thailand. Now she is a passionate vegan who invests her time and energy into health, animals and the environment. Born and raised in Vancouver, Akhil Jobanputra started his journey in the Indian classical vocal form known as khayal at the age of three. He is currently under the tutelage of Gurus (masters) Dr. Pandit Arun Dravid and Pandit Arijit Mahalanabis. Akhil also receives guidance from Pandit Sanjeev Abhyankar. As a performer, Akhil has been featured in various venues and events across Canada, the United States, India, and the United Kingdom. Some of his recent performances include UTSAV SpringFest 2018 (Leicester, UK) and Richmond World Festival 2019 (Richmond, Canada). As an educator, Akhil has taught a number of students to enrich Vancouver’s South Asian traditional arts and culture ecosystem. He was recently featured in the Canadian South Asian Youth Conference, and his paper “My Identity, My Music” was published by the Simon Fraser University Library. At the age of twelve, Akhil founded the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver (ICMSV) with the goal of bringing communities together and promoting various local events. Since then, he has curated a series of initiatives and events geared at increasing awareness, accessibility, and education around Indian classical music.
