The world is celebrating International Women’s day today. On this day, let us highlight some marvelous contributions of the wonderful ladies to make our world a beautiful place to live. Women are key contributors to global environmental sustainability today. According to an environmental expert in United Nations, including women in environmental awareness programs would assist societies in building a sense of responsibility expected to maintain harmony between people and earth’s resources. At every stage, from the 1992 UN Earth Summit to India’s Chipko movement to Kenya’s Green Belt Movement, women’s strong viewpoints and voices highlighted the importance of sustainable development (Mago & Gunwal, 2019). R. Pappammal, a 105-year-old woman from Tamil Nadu, India is a legend in organic farming. She organically cultivates millets, pulses, and vegetables across her 2.5-acre field. She also participates in several agriculture-related events. 43% of women are in the world’s agricultural labor force all around the world(Globalvolunteers).
Millions of people around the world are now daily yoga practitioners. Yoga has conquered the world, and women’s contribution to yoga is terrific. Indira Devi is known as the first lady of yoga. She was the first woman to study with Indian yoga master T. Krishnamacharya, and opened China’s first yoga school, and returned to India to teach yoga to Indians themselves before making her way to America. As per one study in 2016, around 72% of yoga practitioners are women United States.
Several women are working to change the world for animals through tireless passion, dedication, and command of new ways of communicating and organizing. Dr. Melanie Joy is a Harvard-educated psychologist, celebrated speaker, and the author of five books, including the award-winning Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows; Beyond Beliefs: A Guide to Improving Relationships and Communication for Vegans, Vegetarians, and Meat Eaters; Powerarchy: Understanding the Psychology of Oppression for Social Transformation, and Getting Relationships Right. Dr. Joy is the eighth recipient of the Ahimsa Award – previously given to the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela – for her work on global nonviolence. Carol J. Adams authored The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory, in which she explores the links between the oppression of women and that of non-human animals. Women are now determined and undeterred to make positive changes in society and spread awareness among the masses to adopt a better lifestyle.
“When women are empowered and can claim their rights and access to land, leadership, opportunities, and choices, economies grow, food security is enhanced and prospects are improved for current and future generations.”
