Adopting a low-carb diet, as studies over time have concluded, is one of the best ways one can take care of their bodies. It aids in weight loss, controlling appetite, reducing blood pressure and risk of diabetes.

While many might find the transition easy, it is the no meat-eaters that often struggle to meet their daily nutrition needs. That is because vegetarians and vegans steer off of any and all animal products, so conventionally they are consuming a diet that is high in carbs but low on fat which isn’t healthy in the long run.

Fortunately this doesn’t have to be the case anymore. It is possible to reap the benefits of veganism and stay low on carbs!

So how exactly does one live a plant-based, low-carb lifestyle?

Protein-rich foods, selective plants, and healthy fats are the key to unlocking the ideal low-carb vegan lifestyle. Here is how:

CHOOSE YOUR PRODUCE WISELY

Not all vegetables are high on the carb list. Tomatoes, cauliflowers, bell peppers, broccoli and fruits like blueberries, strawberries, avocados, and olives are extremely healthy without being carb-heavy. You can easily include them in your daily diet.

BEFRIEND SOY, ALWAYS

One of the most common food items vegans love, soy is an excellent source of whole protein that is fortunately low on carbs. Available in a variety of textures, make sure to include soy as much as possible in your low-carb vegan diet. You can enjoy edamame, tofu, and tempeh.

GO NUTS!

Nothing beats the amount of healthy fats and protein one can avail from just eating nuts. Whether eaten raw or as a butter/spread, nuts are a must-include to meet your low-carb and high protein requirements. Think almonds, walnuts, peanuts and macadamia nuts.

DON’T COOKIE-CUT CARBS

Avoid getting obsessed with any universal number of what defines a “low-carb diet”. There is truly no fixed definition to the phrase, and it wholly depends on your personal needs and goals. Between 100-150gms, 50-100gms, and 20-50gms a day, take your time experimenting and discovering which one of these scales work best for your body. Just make sure to stock up on protein and fat in the meanwhile!
